Building control process
This article goes through the process of obtaining building control approval. If you haven’t read our article on the recent changes to building control processes in the UK, you may wish to have a read here: https://mb-architecture.uk/building-safety-act-2022/

The Building Safety Act 2022 achieved Royal Assent on 28th April 2022 with implementation dates for certain elements upto 2 years after that date. All of the elements are now in force.
The Building Control process in the UK requires identification of the Principal Designer and the Principal Contractor at the time the Building Control Approved Inspector is appointed.
The contractor may take on both the Principal Designer and the Principal Contractor roles if they are a design and build contractor, or they may just take on the Principal Contractor role.
Where the contractor doesn’t take on the Principal Designer role, a suitably experienced firm or person will need to be appointed to take on the role.
MB Architecture are a suitably experienced firm who carry out the Principal Designer role on projects big and small.
As part of our responsibilities, during the course of the works we will visit the project at agreed stages in preparation for signing off the principal designer duty holder responsibility at the of the project.
At the end of the project the Principal Contractor, the Principal Designer and the Client will, as long as they are happy that the duty holder responsibilities have been carried out, then sign the duty holder declaration form. The building control inspector will then issue their Final Certificate which will confirm that the works have been completed in accordance with the approved plans lodged at the time of the plan check (subject to any agreed changes during the project).
